January 2023 Tarotscopes by Sarah Faith Gottesdiener

The theme for January is New Paradigms.

A paradigm is a standard, perspective, pattern, or set of ideas.

Paradigms are often how we organize our lives.

If we don’t create our own paradigms, then we are living in someone else’s.

The problem arises when we judge ourselves through a paradigm that wasn’t made for us. The problem arises when we try to fit our paradigm into the paradigm of another’s. When we are from an oppressed group, and we view ourselves through the lens of our oppressor. When we want peace and only define it through chaos. When we want true love and define it through the media, heteronormativity, or codependency.

Be intentional about the paradigm you choose to exist in. What does that paradigm look like in action? Respect the fact that everyone else is in their own world, their own reality, their own heaven or hell, operating within wide expanses of compassion, or constricted cages. They often can’t see you accurately. People may tell you they believe in a certain paradigm, but their actions show otherwise. Know when to leave places that don’t support your values. Turn towards those who honor what is most important to you.

This year is all about choosing authentic paradigms intentionally, and then responding from the world you wish to live in. Make your reality original, innovative, unique, and specific to who you are becoming and how you want your life to look like. What do you want your life to be for? How do you want to experience time? How do you want to run your energy? Take action in service of your Paradigm.

This month, practice grounding inside of new paradigm daily. Practice seeing out of your own eyes, your own energy, your own heart. Notice what it takes to make you feel comfortable enough to locate your truth, and stand by it.

— Excerpt is from the 2023 Many Moons Lunar Planner. Order your copy of Many Moons here!

This month's Tarotscopes were channeled and written by meditating on each archetype and pulling a Tarot card for them. Read for whatever sign you feel called to: your Sun, rising, Moon, or a placement that is particularly loud right now.*

Aries
4 of Wands

Aries, the year begins with you feeling refreshed, supported, and understood. With your different goals broken down into manageable pieces. With your calendar filled up enough to give you tons to look forward to, but open enough to let yourself recover and rest. How? You’ve prioritized it. You’ve felt into what that looks like, and tried it out every day. You’ve made promises to yourself that you’ve kept. You’ve kept up your boundaries and maintained your sleep hygiene.

Aries, this month has you ready to explore some different aspects of your identity. Get out the scissors and glue and collage all afternoon. Sign up for, and actually attend, that poetry workshop. Show up to a party as a version of your future self and see what happens. Make up fun, secret rules for yourself that change how you relate to annoyances and boring errands. Take yourself out for a treat to celebrate the accomplishments of having changed your mindset and behaviors.

Through all of this, you’re rewriting the untrue stories that you can’t care for others at the expense of yourself. You’re easing your way out of some ruts with support, a plan, and cosmic relief. You’re making your own luck — you’re become your very own lucky charm.

Suggested spell ingredients: Parkinson’s law, passionflower tincture, therapy, meal prep/batching nights with friends, and flower agate by your bedside.

Taurus
Ace of Cups

Taurus, your love is a psychic kind of love— wants and needs taken care of even before they knew they had them. Taurus, your care is legendary. Your time and attention are gifts to anyone that knows you. It’s sometimes intimidating, too. You’re a tough act to follow, regardless of how you may regard yourself. What is status quo to you is a high bar for others.

In January, you’ve got to see people’s attempts at intimacy for what they are: genuine efforts, at the edge of where they are at currently. Rein in your expectations of others. Instead of outsourcing resolution or validation, harness that energy for some heart-to-hearts with yourself. Reciprocity will come in time, as you redefine it realistically. Yes, you can find the love you seek: the deeper relationships, the community. It won’t happen overnight, but it could happen by the end of 2023. Seek it out, show up, and keep showing up. Even when it’s hard or boring. Even when it stretches the edges of your heart — and patience.

Taurus, you want a world filled with beautiful objects, exquisite experiences, and memories that are everlasting. You want the people in your life to show you love in the way you need it. You want respect yes, but also adoration. It starts with you. Your love is psychic. Are you giving yourself what you truly need the most?

Suggested spell ingredients: Amethyst, Horses by Patti Smith, morning stretches, spearmint tea instead of excess caffeine, Our Chariot Year Online Workshop, and a nest of dried lavender sprigs on your altar.

Gemini
3 of Swords

Gemini, you need to get real. What got you into a quandary isn’t going to get you out of it. Do not take advice from people who haven’t been where you’ve been. Do not overburden yourself with shoulds, shame, or spirals. Take accountability for what’s yours: nothing more, nothing less.

The 3 of Swords resonates with the famous Buddhist lesson of the second arrow. There’s the thought, then there’s the story or judgment about the thought. It’s always the second arrow that can spiral us out, keep us hooked or plugged into fear or anger. Can you choose the third arrow, as consciously as possible? The third arrow that can set you free, and points to a target of clarity. The third arrow helps you process what hurts with neutrality and understanding.

You’re not a victim or a villain, but someone who survived some hard hard stuff and decided to stay kind. You aren’t your worst moments or your longest victory laps, but a complete human open to the spectrum of experience. Increasingly, you’re in a body that feels like home. You’ve created the safety you need to release and process some intense energy. Understand what might be happening: a healing process in the haven of safety you’ve been able to created. You don’t punish the sky for rain, so don’t punish yourself for your grief. Use your broken heart and go make some incredible art.

Suggested spell ingredients: Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself by Melody Beattie, fencing tournament videos, The Princess Bride, some long art making sessions, and Our Chariot Year Online Workshop.

Cancer
The Lovers

For the first few months of the year, you’ll be integrating lessons from last year. There’s a lot to process, a lot to reflect on, and a lot of different actions to take. Get clear on what worked and what didn’t. Let the harder messages transform into boundaries and clarity about what you are doing differently. Compost, clear, and cleanse.

Through this month—and the entire year—you will be evolving and transforming into an entirely different flower. At this time next year so much will be totally transformed, because of what you decided to invest in, who you decided to partner with, and where you were brave enough to go. It’s ok that you can’t quite see that version of yourself yet. It’s ok if you’re still recovering, still nursing some wounds right now. Do not let yourself get so swept up in your pain that your pain is what you become. Now is about what you love. Focus on that above all else.

At the heart of this process must be a willingness to truly understand the unique power you possess. That means experiencing yourself and your gifts through joy, laughter, bliss, and amusement. It means understanding that you are back in Earth School this year, as a teeny baby student creating the real curriculum you’ll need in order to step forward in all your brilliance. Write down everything you need to learn and promise you’ll enjoy learning it: time management, parenting, self-love for advanced practitioners, coding, finances, and how to let go, for good.

Suggested spell ingredients: Lovers Perfume, mirror magic, a new Earth School syllabus, songs by Sade, a new plant to care for that symbolizes your growth, and Our Chariot Year Online Workshop.

Leo
Page of Cups

Your inner child isn’t always an innocent, playful sunflower needing reassurance and hugs. Sometimes, it’s a cranky yet cute tornado throwing a tantrum. Your anger or exhaustion could be scary to express, for reasons that aren’t your fault. You might not have been given space to do so as a child, or been made to feel like you wouldn’t be lovable if you went against another’s grain. No matter how those younger parts are showing up, it’s time to listen. If you’re feeling fed up, impatient, or neglected, it’s understandable. Part of processing uncomfortable feelings means letting them surface and holding them with compassion, or the very least, neutrality. Underneath the choppy emotional waves lie heart song messages.

January is a month to practice being with all your different parts. If you can’t find it in you to love that irrationality or neediness, start with appreciation. Tune into what the core needs are, underneath: is it respect, assurance, or simply acknowledgment? Practice saying, “I see you, I hear you, I’m here for you,” and see what shifts. A return to love starts with small steps.

Holding space for more of yourself this month includes levity: do not overestimate the power of having fun. Simplicity, laughter, and silliness must be your companions through the absurdity of it all. Invite in playfulness as your problem solver, bridge to others, and overall balm.

Suggested spell ingredients: Videos of tadpoles, a perfect January playlist, ocean jasper, moss terrariums, and tools to keep you grounded.

Virgo
Justice

You don’t expect fairness from an unfair world, Virgo, but why are you unfair to yourself? Let this be the year you let go of any resentments or grudges you’ve been carrying against your sweet self. Let this be the year you release work that is “good enough” and make more messes. Let this be the year that you don’t equate the process with perfection. Relating to yourself differently is a practice that begins with acceptance. It is supported by a clear perspective on what is and is not yours. Intrinsic boundaries can help

Intrinsic boundaries mean that your energy is congruent with your outside behavior. It means that "no" is a final signal: your energy is not available for further exchange. Not externally, or internally.

Having intrinsic boundaries means you're in the present moment. It means you have found effective ways to process emotions and energy. Instead of venting, ruminating, and spending more energy on situations and behavior outside of your control, explore ways to release, discharge, and let go. This practice also means being ok with people not listening to your requests, and proceeding accordingly instead of wasting more energy trying to convince them, over-explain, or get huffy.

It's not about what you expect of others, it's what you expect of yourself. It's about how you keep your energetic integrity. It’s how you treat yourself with more fairness. It’s how you cultivate the self-respect that you inherently deserve.

Suggested spell ingredients: Tabletop breathing, The Miracle of Mindfulness: An Introduction to the Practice of Meditation by Thich Nhat Hanh, green moonstone, raised rates, and Our Chariot Year Online Workshop.

Libra
Ace of Wands

The first month of the year is incredibly supportive of any new creative projects and endeavors you are ready to begin. There’s one big caveat here: nothing you start now must become a drag or a burden later on. The process itself must stay fun, invigorating, and far away from pressure and stress. Whatever you’re birthing must be a bonafide, full-blown, positive obsession.

In the past, you’ve outsourced your life force to external validation or numbers, but this year, you’re free from all those hooks. You’ve realized that it doesn’t matter what you’ve accomplished if you can’t enjoy the process. You’ve accomplished a lot! It doesn’t matter what you’ve created if you don’t feel good about yourself within. And you’re ready to feel better than ever before! A quick way to feel better than ever is to celebrate what you’ve already accomplished, especially the feats that seem like miracles.

Stay close to the spark. Focus on your life force and what gives you energy. Gather people around you who want to have long, passionate conversations about philosophy, care work, creativity, and dreams. Every day, as much as you can, become your own best friend.

Suggested spell ingredients: the Rise Magic Candle, sunshine, scheduled blocks for creativity, more support, peach moonstone, and the studio's astrology online workshop with Anthony Perrotta.

Scorpio
Knight of Swords, Reversed

January highlights the importance of perspective. The bigger picture wants to be visioned into, but you might be stuck in urgency mode: feeling overwhelmed with tasks and obligations that don’t bring joy, and thus, a squashed sense of overall motivation. What is your why? Where is your why? Where has your focus gotten too narrow?

James Williams coined three layers of our attention. There’s the spotlight layer: what is right in front of us, aka our tasks for the day, the emails that need responding to. There’s starlight: our long-term goals and dreams, aka what guides our motivation. And then, there’s daylight: our ability to see clearly, figure out what we want, and be able to respond in accordance. Start with your starlight layer to locate that elusive why, then refine your daylight layer all this month for some big shifts.

This month is ripe for deep reflections and recalibration. Begin with focus, awareness, and attention. Whether it’s meditation, breathing techniques, some good, old-fashioned journal prompts, or another practice that works for you, make that a priority every day. What is focused on, grows.

Suggested spell ingredients: a mindfulness practice, tabletop breathing, science fiction, a screen time detox, and Moon Studio’s astrology online workshop with Anthony Perrotta.

Sagittarius
The Tower

The psychiatrist Phil Stutz outlines 3 facts of life that are inescapable: pain, uncertainty, and having to constantly do the work. Gentle Archer, no matter where you find yourself at the start of this Gregorian new year, the acceptance of these facts will help orient you. There’s so much to be grateful for and if everything is currently great, coast for a while. Gather that gratitude like fertilizer for uncertain times.
If certain truths seem unavoidable and are shaking things up, remember those 3 truths, and, don’t forget to begin and end your days with gratitude.

The Tower is always a gentle or loud-as-hell nudge to check in on the foundations of life. Feeling off or out of sorts is completely normal in these chaotic times. Acknowledgment that a few scenarios aren’t in alignment will help you make needed adjustments. Start small, and be reasonable. Do what you can with what you’ve got. What you’ve got is more than enough.

Endings are beginnings in disguise. It could be time to completely quit a habit, relationship, belief, or particular role, or maybe all is needed is a pause or a stepping away. Slowly go through an inventory of what you want to keep, and what might need to be released, recycled, or given away. Ultimately, you want your whole life to feel resonant, which starts from the inside out. Try to make the work fun as you dance in the uncertainty that twinkles around us all.

Suggested spell ingredients: Stutz, green opal, this Tower exercise, Our Chariot Year Online Workshop, and gratitude every single day.

Capricorn
8 of Wands

If you want your prayers to be answered, you’ve got to be brave enough to speak them out loud. A lot of what you want will require you to experiment, be humble, ask for support, and take action in a different way. You’ll get what you want by going after it. Do not worry about the specifics. Focus on finding the time, energy, discipline, and amusement you’ll need to keep going. Focus on honing in on the honesty you’ll need to keep yourself accountable so that you evolve from the inside out.

This year is all about refinement through reiteration for you, Seagoat. It’s a trial-by-fire kind of year, it’s a many-irons-in-the-fire kind of year. That doesn’t mean overloading your schedule or saying yes to every cool-sounding outside request. It means choosing projects, hobbies, and relationships that will help you both up-level and feel supported. This means prioritizing bold, imperfect actions. First, use your discernment, and then, learn by doing.

The first three months of the year are the time to lay down the foundational support for this growth. Invest in what will strengthen resilience and motivation. Trust your instincts. Align with where you’re headed, not where you’ve been.

Suggested spell ingredients: Our Chariot Year Online Workshop, carnelian palm stones, cinnamon sticks, bottles of sunshine, first drafts, and a playlist of songs that you can’t help but dance and move to.

Aquarius
The Hermit

You’ve been scattered and overextended for far too long, Cosmic Waterbearer. January offers up a reprieve. Winter must be a season of reset. Reset orders of importance: let the big picture, big purpose types of quandaries guide you instead of quick dopamine hits of screen time, or unnecessary obligations led by your people-pleasing tendencies. Reset your nervous system so that your capacity can receive bigger and brighter. Reset your consumption so that all internal radio dials are tuned into your intuition.

It isn’t that your instincts are off, it’s that you’ve still got one too many influences running in the background of your psyche, like website tabs that never close. Try an intentional consumption cleanse: the first to go is anything that jacks up your anxiety. The next is anything that makes you feel like you have to perform, mask, or contort your authenticity.

You can avoid certain adult feeling things until the consequences of not dealing with them backfire in painful ways. Deal with what needs to be dealt with. Start little by little, one by one. Pare down. You can always add more later, but for now, focus on what is most important and what gives you the most satisfaction and gain. Do less to get more: more pleasure, more presence, more vitality.

Suggested spell ingredients: Space, time, NASA documentaries, Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May, (Re)connect & Recalibrate to Your Truths: An Astrology Workshop with Anthony Perrotta, and a fresh set of woolen pajamas to dream in.

Pisces
6 of Swords

Make this the year that you don’t go back to the places that make you feel small. Make this the year that you can see people’s true colors the first time they show you. Make this the year you don’t feel guilty about moving on, or ambivalent about the past. You did what you could with what you knew. Isn’t that enough?

The beginning of the year has you reckoning with some of the ways you’ve sold yourself short, and how you’ve passed up some past opportunities because of low self-esteem. It’s ok to name where you tend to self-sabotage, but it’s not ok to shame yourself about it. Practice disrupting spirals with hugs, jumping jacks, deep breaths, or humming. Practice making a different, better choice, until it becomes automatic. Face some organizational issues now, and do some structured planning to get ahead later.

Make this the year that you continue to share your gifts with the world because the world needs them. Make this the year that the negative self-talk and doubt fade away. Make this the year that you truly put yourself first. Make this the year that you finally find deep, sweet, and spacious refuge within.

Suggested spell ingredients: CBD honey, a dream journal, salt baths, homemade pillow spray of your favorite scents, rewilding, long walks before the day begins, and a letter to summertime you to recenter yourself in the months to come.
